Denmark - Sweden20-270305: Copenhagen -> Malmo -> Gothenburg -> Stockholm
hmm... my short memory can never recall what was done. haha... unless it's a realli significant event like having meatball at IKEA for the first time in my life!!!! ya i know....very suaku right... but at least my first time is in Stockholm!!!!
well....so... it was freezing cold when we reach copenhagen.... cant exactly rmb wat we did.... hahaha... for any details, pls refer to
fidel's blog. juz know that throughout the trip, TV was our mean of survival!! cos in both Denmark and Sweden, the main places of 'attraction' are museums... and they purposely close at 4pm!!!! If we wait a few more days and visit in April then they'll open till later... maybe 7pm. and... being pigs, we usually wake up in time for the last few minutes of breakfast (if provided), and by the time we are ready to set off, it's oredi 11+am. haha... then visit one place, have lunch, and that's it! 4pm. haha... the city become so isolated and cold after tat... so bobian, we have no choice but to go back to our warm hostel and watch TV!!!!! wHeeEe... being so deprived of the TV, it was really a joy whenever we see a television set in every hostel we stayed in. We managed to catch lotsa shows... Friends, Everyone Loves Raymond, There's smtg about Miriam, Black Hawk Down, The Swan, Marry Poppin(er...some reality show where a nanny manage to discipline 5 naughty kids in juz a week's time... power eh?), The Mexican, Discovery Channel!, etcetc... haha... really feels like a holiday. =P
Shall not proceed with the itinery of the trip.. will juz post random fotos... quite a number there, so... take ur time!!
Hans Christian Andersen
Presenting Hans Christian Andersen~ Hmm.. i didn't know his name b4 this but i know the stories he wrote!! Ugly duckling... Little mermaid... Matchstick girl.. etc. Visited a museum for him and his work..
kastellet
hmm... this is on a star shaped island... i tink it was where a castle stood but was either burned down or destroyed oredi. haha... what a good tourist i am, not knowing what i've toured. hee... anyway, whatever is now on the island is not really interesting. =P
quackquack
OoOoOh... the ducks with fantastic qi gong!! haha... these little creatures found at all the frozen lakes fasicnate us the most with their 'skating' skills, their loveydovey chasing of their mates, and of cos their falling into the water when the ice broke under their weight and being stuck in the hole, they had to waddle out trying to break the ice ard them.. so cute!!!
The Little Mermaid
this poor girl here had gone thru soo much..
1961 - her hair was painted red and she was dressed in bra
1963 - drenched with red paint
1964 - head was cut off
1976 - drenched with paint again
1984 - right arm lost
1998 - head lost again
2003 - she was totally knocked down from the stone!!
hmm.... so weird. why do so many pple want to destroy her??? luckily i get to see what i should see when i reach the stone.... pHeW~

a view of copenhagen taken from the round tower..
copenhagen central station
fidel proudly holding our beloved MetroExpress which is our daily necessity to check out the daily TV programme schedule!!! ;)
beautiful tulips

after one whole day of walking, a sofa is finally seen in the shopping centre!!! haha... but, someone ran and occupy the whole sofa... so me and jac had to look for alternative!! haha... lalalalala...
gothenburg library
of all places... would u ever expect to find tourists in a library??? haha... yeah, this was taken in the children section of the gotherburg library. was there for the warmth and sofa.. :p and did u know the kids there were into manga!! Love Hina... Naruto.. and more!!
maritime museum
heh heh... here's ur captain of the day!! =P this is the maritime museum... the coldest museum so far cos it's outdoor!! there were many different ships... gunship, U-boat, patrol boats.. hmm, k i cant rmb liao.

throughout the visit, we had to climb up and down and up and down and up and down the ships... -_-" so tiring... and the stairs/ladders are so steep and narrow... me and jac were always stuck in holes like this becos of our bulky bags. and.. wah, i duno if i pity or admire those ppl in the navy... i know i sure cannot survive in such claustrophobic condition. i'll go mad!!!
oh oh... i saw the steam engine of a huge ship too!! waaah... it's NOTHING near to what i learn in my notes man... how did any engineer design that i've no idea...
happy family
aren't we adorable???? heee...

actually i didn't enjoy gothenburg much cos it was sooo gloomy and misty and dull... worse than london!!! oh man... pathetic. i like this river though! hee...
twisted pistol
haha... my hand is too short to pull the trigger. anyway, this twisted gun is a symbol against violence.. so no pt pulling the trigger ya? hmm... jac said there were onli supposed to be 3 in the world, one in new york, one in copenhagen, and another one forgot where. paiseh.. hee~ so this one in stockholm is a fake!!! pirated goods!!!
night shot
a night shot of gamla stan! see the bright full moon?? haha... quite a bit of our memory cards were used simply to capture the big round moon!! but onli jac's camera is power enough to sucessfully capture it..

the 'snow' behind us is NOT snow but ice!!! one big frozen lake!! ooooh... white easter. haha... i love it!!
funny thing is we can actually feel the heat from the sun but the ice/snow is just not melting. anyone knows why?

look at how deep the snow is!! heh... nice picture right? i took it!!! hahaa... =P

like the cracks between the pieces of ice...
the Vasa
taken from 4 storeys above the ground floor, this warship,
the Vasa, was the original one that sank on its maiden voyage on 10 August 1628 and was dug out from the seabed 333 yrs after. wow.. i'm never tat gd at history! haha... aniway it sank not bcos it was hit in a battle, but bcos it heeled over due to poor stability and water rushed in from the open gunports at the side.. -_-" who was to blame?? there wasn't an ans then... neither is there one now.
Nobel medal
One of the 5 medals that were awarded to the Nobel Laureates. The
Nobel Museum was started in 2001 (hence i couldn't find it in my outdated Lonely Planet guide published in 2000.. dengz) in Stockholm. Was very lucky to have a tour guide at the time we enter the museum so was given some explanation and info abt the Nobel prizes. Was even more coincidental that we got to meet Lester and Lianglong there!!!

this is one of the most beautiful view we came across during the trip. this photo is definitely not giving it the credits it deserve. love the clear blue sky... and i think water bodies (not turbulent ones..) always create the desired effect of calming oneself... aaah... beaautiful!!

this photo is underexposed. haha... cos the sun is setting and everything is supposed to look golden? bah.. duno. i'm not good in photography. aniway, look at the reflection of the buildings in the background~ symmetry!

here is an 'artistic' attempt by my amateur-ish auto camera. haha... think it looks pretty gooood! with a non-pro camera and a non-pro photographer... considered acceptable right??
IKEA
haha... last but not least, how can we ever forget IKEA!!!! this big big IKEA, which was featured in Amazing Race Season 6!!, was all the way in Zone 3 of Stockholm... but, the meatball is definitely worth the travel!!! we had a total of 60 meatballs and yUmMyLiCiouS!!! i'm sooooo gonna go to IKEA back in spore very often.... hahaha...

painpainyup... today was the london games. hmm... the sports were spread all over. netball and soccer at royal oaks, floorball at union gym, badminton at great hall, squash and volleyball at wilson house, and table tennis and tennis at southside. was playing in the netball team, so for the first time since... i cant rmb when... i woke up at 730am!!! woOooOo....
the temperature was perfect for playing... we warmed up a little and laughingly start our first match. hmm... lost. but... nvm! the second match was up against... k i cant rmb a single thing abt the netball game actually. cant rmb who we were against....cant rmb the scores. at least i know we lost one match, drew two, and won one!!! haha.... and end up being third out of the five teams in the round robin. so.... not really that bad considering the fact that we drew with the champion team during the round robin. heehee.... yeah, think our attitude in the game was very good!! as in... we were just there to have fun, instead of being so competitive and serious and drained. so... on the whole, we really had fun and was like the only team laughing all the way... =P many of us sustained some minor injuries though... haijade suffered the most injuries, suffering a fall, a bruise on the eye, a knock that caused her earrings to come off, and anymore? qihui had a 'great' fall... as in she managed to 'turn ard' so that she fall on her bums and not on all four. clever!! think doris fell as well... and ashley suffered from some elbowing from her sticky defender. as for me, hmm... had quite a 'weird' time playing with the strained and tight hamstring/muscles (i still duno which one it is) so was running quite strangely i think. other than that, was knocked to the ground by i dun even know who and was giddy for like 5 seconds.. juz sat on the floor and couldn't get up. haha... then after tat fell again and made a hole in my a-few-months-old track pants and kena bruises and minor scratch on both knees and palms. SO SAD!~~ my dear track pants is gone... ='( and finally a slightly-sprained right thumb - a common injury i get whenever i play netball. cant even type properly now... though i dun realli use it to press the spacebar. haha...
without staying for the final match, i left for the union gym to support the floorball team!! wanted to make full use of the weather and hence decided to walk from royal oaks back to school through hyde park. wasn't realli the best idea cos it was actually a little too warm and the sun is glaring right into my face!!!! i'm gonna be black soon... =( anyhow, hyde park was sooooo crowded!!!! oh man... changed my decision to visit hyde park frequently during the easter hols liao. haha... too many pple sunbathing or having pinic there for my liking. a brit in his 40s(?) chatted with me while we were walking along hyde park... haha.. find it very relaxing to be juz chatting with some random strangers in such a weather in the park!!! didn't know i'ld do that!! =P
is now having trouble trying to figure out the 'warmth' of the jackets to bring to copenhagen and stockholm. with only 2 more hours of potential sleep and the potential achings and injuries, please let me survive my trip~!! haha... =P will be back on next sunday evening. cya again then!! meanwhile... take care, and have fUn~!!! ;)
last day of termyes... it's finally the end of term!! hmm... finally can sense a little excitement liao. hahaha... juz got back from zhicheng's end-of-term-potluck. yummy.....good food!!! horfun, pasta, salad, curry chicken, shuama/kebab/parteh?, etc... ! and..... a bit of gay talk. hmm. and as usual, indian poker to decide who finish the remaining food. anyway, thank goodness there's no ghost stories!!! at least not b4 i leave... PheW!~
i am sooo in love with the weather these few days. yeah... it oredi feels like summer. walking around with juz a t-shirt, and even sandals! is the very last thing i would expect myself doing in march. not when i was still wearing 3 layers onli a week back. yeah... the path to sch and back home is no longer a rush to get away from the cold, but a relaxing walk that can take me double the time i usually take~ i am sooooo happy whenever i was rushing for lecture and felt the glaring sunlight pouring on me (i wasn't thinking much abt the tanning... that'll come later... =P). I think i really need 'real' sunlight to survive. not the gloomy ones that onli appear for a while to 'show face'. yeah.... and seeing the flowers blooming and the leaves starting to grow on the trees cheer me up!!! there's life again!! OooOh... i soooo love the weather now. i'm soo gonna spend many days in the holiday in hyde park!!! haha... it's such a good feeling to walk around now... dun wanna be indoor!!! well.... hopefully the weather will continue to be at this stage for a longer period of time and not suddenly raise the temperature like mad. i dun need that high a temperature to thaw myself after the copenhagen-stockholm trip!!!
hmm.... my money is still not in yet. is PUB playing a joke on me?? even thomas got his allowance oredi... hmmm. dun tell me they are not sponsoring me anymore??? kk, just joking only, dun let them see this! =P well... but i feel so bad. i'm so in debt... 1029.85 pounds in debt!!! i wonder how relaxed i will be in the trip.... cos my entire trip's cost are not paid out of my own pocket!!! yet. =P in case u were wondering, the other half of the debt was to pay for my summer air tix lar!
so tml have to wake up at 730am to be at bayswater at 9am for our netball. wow... i wonder when was the last time i woke up at such early timings man!!!! realli hope i'll be able to drag myself out in time.... will try to have an early night then. Try....
Good luck to everyone playing tml!! ;)
pump poster
oooh... i like my pump poster soooo much!!! thanks sooo much to my powerful groupmate who is soo good in this kind of thing. i find it professional!! k... at least it looked like what i would have wanted it to be. find it a bit plain though... not enough information. but, aiya... i oso cant tink of more crap to add in... so just have to submit this. it's out on mech eng foyer oredi!! probably would be gone by the time term starts again... so, here it is!! hee... shweeet!

ramblingtwo more days to the end of term... but lessons are as usual. (at least it feels the same after excluding the lessons i usually dun attend) yeah... just one more report left. but that's the one which i've absolutely no clue how to tackle. just like what ashley had blogged abt, it's the freaking electronics report. DAMN! *frustrated* only one more day to complete it.... *fingers crossed*
ya... so two more days to holiday but i dun feel the excitment yet. it doesn't feel like i'm going to have a 5 weeks break. still so bz... tml do report, fri got potluck, sat got london games, and sun i'll be off to copenhagen! hmmm.... guess i'll only haf a breather after i reach denmark huh. i'm juz hoping that i wun start my trip with aching muscles, ouching at every single movement made. haha... and, next week is gonna be a cold week again... please let it be an above zero degree celcius trip!!! i think i'ld haf to bring my extra fat jacket along... =(
i think i'll be mugging like mad during the hols, or rather, i hope i'ld be. lagging soo sooo behind my work. haven't been doing any tutorials nor listening to lectures for fluid mech since 7 weeks ago; for the first time, i didn't touch my maths notes nor understand what's going on for the past 5 weeks; totally ignore heat transfer ever since the notes with 100 equations was given out mayb 7 weeks ago too?; EIC... oh, the last ting i really remembered is that lamperth got himself a baby girl!! whatever bode plot is abt... hmm... i can never make out his mumblings nor tiny messy handwriting...; materials is always best for sleeping cos of the hypnotising chants and dim lights; and manufacturing... i guess all i had are the printed slides, with no clue abt what those workshop terms on the sheet are. sad huh. really wondered where my discipline flew to. i'm actually very disappointed with myself. sigh....
the above are just to make myself realize how much work i shud have done by today but didn't. distractions? cant concentrate on my work? yeah... alot of those this academic year. i need to settle down man. mind still floating aimlessly. not good. so... please dun blame me for being anti-social. i cant afford to exchange my degree for that, i'll die if i break the bond! mayb not... mayb just discharged as a bankrupt. haha... blame it on my bad time management and no discipline lar. sigh....

when wat u blogged abt became a hot topic among ur readers... are u supposed to be very happy abt it???
yeah, it is supposed to be the case. recently, an article i posted on my blog started appearing in many other ppl's blogs as well. it does feel a little satisfying that what i posted is of interest to so many ppl. however, the more attention this article got, the more disturbed i am. because the intention of posting this article wasn't met. it backfired instead.
it was supposed to be a way of showing my appreciation for my male friends and all other guys who have been caring and supportive. just as simple as that. just to let them know... there are pple who take note and appreciate all these things they've selflessly done. a way of saying thanks. just as simple as that.
but i probably didn't see that to many others who've been hurt before by being nice, this is such a disturbing article.
well... all the 'nice guys are losers', 'nice guys finish last' blahblah... aren't they just a generalisation? 一只竹竿打翻全船人? who says there isn't nice guys who finished first? who says there isn't nice guys who got themselves wonderful gfs? this article is for the nice guys whose time hasn't arrived yet... not for ALL the nice guys.
and... what about the 'nice gals'? there isn't even an article for them! but are they complaining? i believe you are nice to a person becos u want that person to be happy, it comes from ur heart... not becos u want to be classified under 'nice'. so what if u r hurt? so what if u 'finish last'? does it matter that much? if it does, then dun be nice to her... if u r waiting for smtg in return but u dun get it, stop whatever sacrifice or effort u tink u r making. be fair to urself.

my country, my homei went to IC's M-night last Saturday to support Charlotte for all her lack of sleep and time and brain cells and whatever she've sacrificed to write the script and do her part for publicity. And of cos, hearing how good last yr's M-night was was a plus point in convincing myself to get the ticket.
and hence, the long awaited M-night came and went. I must say i'm really impressed by the entire performance. I love all the dances... the first dance was really amazing with the use of the UVs and all, and the bhangra dance!!!! oh man... i love it!! love the slapping part alot too!!! haha... was so hoping tat there'll be an 'encore' of it after the whole show ended. haha... the use of the stage was well done too! oooh... i oso like the band, or rather... the guitarist who sang soooo well... a pity the sounds system wasn't good enough. and yeah... i tink i haf a crush on the main lead too... RAVI! hahaaha.. find it quite funny that he is a chinese acting as a malay though... :p
hmmm... throughout the story, there were many instances where the good of a little simple village was repeated - like hearing the birds chirping early in the morning, fishing by the river, the traditional games played, the village head, the village school, paddle pop!, etc... i actualli find them a little close to heart. to those who still duno, I am not a sporean even though i was born and grew up in spore. heh.. so, yeah... a malaysian i am, my 'hometown' (more of my parents' hometown) is in negri sembilan (tat is somewhere between malacca and KL), in a little kampung called
Ayer Kuning. yeah... used to go back during CNY and school holidays when i was young. that's when i would play with my cousins and during CNY, play with fireworks!!! but... haven't went back since JC. quite missed it sometimes... ya, so actually, i do feel a little sense of belonging when i was watching the show. city life in malaysia like KL is nothing close to my heart at all, but this serene kampung life... yeah, a little. i think if i'm a true blue malaysian... all these would have hit me so much harder and i think i would really love malaysia so much more. perhaps that explains why my father was always so against the changing of our citizenship.
but... my real home is still in singapore. that's the place where i am really familiar with, the place where my family and friends are, the place where i grew up in, the place where i would first think of whenever i think of home. i guess National Education is quite successful after all!! ;)

happy (belated?) bdae to jon!!by request, i shall made an entry on the celebration of jonathan's 21st birthday!!! hahaha... HapPY?? ;)
first and foremost, an apology to him for promising to go to leicester to celebrate his bdae... but cos it clashed with another birthday celebration and other unforseen circumstances, i didn't do it. >_< sooooo sorry!!!!!!
hence, a 'make up' celebration was held in London on Fri!!! wHEeEe... skipped that day's lesson (bcos i couldn't wake up in time for it...haha...) and woke up to make it in time to fetch jon from the train station. hmm... well... actually not much was done lar. cos it's oredi the afternoon... so, he dropped by my place to transfer one or two of his great collection of disney cartoons into my oredi-so-prone-to-hanging laptop. hahaha... and then, went to belgro to beat-the-clock!!!! wOooO...
well, being only my 2nd visit there, i ordered the mussels which 'wow-ed' me when i went there the previous time last yr (tat was the first time i tasted mussels too..) and the birthday boy ordered mussels too cos of my recommendation. but growing boy needs more food... haha.. so he ordered some championge(?) tingy... basically a pastry with mushroom filling and creamy gravy? k... i'm not gd at describing food. anyway, the mussels turned out to be quite crap... quite a number were half-cooked, uncooked, and i even threw out one cos it tasted too fishy. yUcKs! kopped a few bites of the pastry from him and *drools*, it was fantabudelicious!!! hahaha... oh man, i'm so gonna order that the next time i go belgro again! tat was wat i said then.
that was all for the day. cos he had to go to heathrow to pick up another fren, who flew all the way from new york just to celebrate his birthday. what good friend he has right!!!?? *envious* and so, a short meeting, more like a gathering than a celebration(bcos got no birthday cake... opps..) but nonetheless, it's always great seeing a good fren and i do hope u enjoyed urself?
on a side note.. jonathan, cheer up and get well soon k?? dun b too bothered by what's going on now. holiday is here soon!!! and... k lar, i'll try to da bao duck for u... hahaahaha!
to my friendsIt is high time i express my gratitude to my friends.
I would like to thank the ones who have always stood by me, who have helped me, who have shown me their concerns, who have encouraged me, who have in one way or another help me survive till now.
to you, when you gave me advice and encouragement during the time i'm lost.
to you, when you neglect ur work and come all the way just to keep me company to make sure i'm alright and sane.
to you, when you approach me to talk to me and keep me involve in the group whenever u sensed i'm feeling down or lonely.
to you, when u go out of ur way and make the effort for me
and to you, for believing in me.

the 1000 milestonewheeeee.... 1000 hits in exactly a month!!! thank you for all ur support man!! haha.. 谢谢关照,谢谢支持!有空再来,期待你大架光临!^^ aRigAto!!
to... 'commemorate'(?) on that (nono... this is not really suitable for that)...here's a little smtg interesting or amusing to share:
when someone scolds you: 'You bugger!!', have you any idea what that someone might mean or refer to??
check it out?
blogging patternbloggers usually started blogging due to peer pressure (oh it's so fun!) or felt a need to pour out their thoughts or feelings.
for those find-it-so-fun bloggers, yours truly included, they would start filling their blogs with their daily happenings of life. maybe telling you what time they woke up, what time they managed to get out of bed to brush their teeth, how long they took to have their breakfast, then how many dogs they saw on the way to school (oh i saw 4 enormous ones of height up to my waist just a few days back!) and *yawn* u get the idea. hahaha... i tink that was what happened in my blog... =P
then slowly, when the fun died down a little cos they don't see much 'movements' on their blogs, i.e. no sign of ppl visiting or showing interest by dropping comments, or cos they were getting busy, or cos they just suddenly had lesser 'exciting' things to say all of a sudden, the frequency at which they blog dropped... sometimes quite drastically. some simply just gave up totally... some hanged on for a while...
for the ones who persevered, together with those who start blogging to 'shout', instead of announcing to the whole world what happened to their daily lives, they would slowly move on to pour out their feelings or thoughts on everything and anything, informing the whole world of their anger, their sorrows, their happiness, their disagreements with certain beliefs, their sudden enlightments, ... ...
but... when these more personal entries created a little more attention than desired, one would start to wonder if it's a good thing to announce all these to the world. like what enxin and eewen mentioned b4, a blog is after all a web log. it is accessible to everyone out there with access to the internet... like i've got a brazilian, a canadian, an aussie and some other unknown visits to my blog before. it's alright if strangers read them, they would just read and go. who cares? but... if they are people whom u know... then sometimes things would realli get a little complicated, unless they are generous enough to 'show' their presence and kind understanding. but still...
so after that, the blog might see less and less of these kind of entries. they may become less obvious and less direct such that people not involved wouldn't really know what's going on... haha... *blur like me*... or they would 'revert back' to their 'normal daily lives blogging', but with much less mundane details. haha...
and ani further than that... i've no idea. hahaha... maybe can ask those who have kept their blogs long enough and got past this stage. well... of cos, this is not the general pattern among blogs. maybe just mine. hahahaha...
k... i'm very tired now... body aching all over due to yesterday's netball. :( but... did i mention i quite like the aching? hahha...
back to report again. -_-"
*anyway, it's so fun to see myself blogging, and at the other end of the room, another laptop oso at the same blogging page... lol ;)*

Happy Birthday Jac!!!Happy 20th Birthday to Jac!! wOoHoO... haha... it's not that bad having the digit 2 as the first digit of ur age... at least u dun feel the impact until way later. LoL~
my 20th bdae was over just 2 months ago, Fidel's 21st bdae was onli over 2 weeks ago, and today we had another house party for Jac~ Birthday parties after birthday parties... never ending eh? Well, it isn't that bad since we always get to have the lovely Tiramisu from the basement household!! Well done Charlotte and.. apprentice 'Red Baby Name'! ;P And Jac's birthday cake is the same as the one I had!! hahaa... do roomies get even the same birthday cakes? Nonetheless, it was a sinful slice of chocolate cheesecake from starbucks. (Hope i got the facts right on that..) YuMMy!
Wasn't exactly 'prepared' for the party since I only got to know about it from one of the guests this very morning. Had always assumed that it'ld be held tml cos tml is the real birth-day. But... oh well...
Plans had to be changed and rescheduled to tml. Another weekend gone for me~

horro-scopeGot this
hOrRoScOpE tingy from
Enxin's blog:
I am a
Capricorn.
"
Cruel, cold and heartless, the Capricorn has all the warmth of an iceberg in January. He is a tyrant at work and an inquisitor at home.
A Capricorn sees picking on others as one of the major reasons for his existence. He will get worked up over minor infractions, and is completely devoid of sense of humor. It is not uncommon for a Capricorn to be abusive towards his (her) significant other, be it a spouse or a best friend.
Capricorns will back down only if faced with a threat of physical force, or intence psychological pressure.
Intellectually primitive, lacking any semblance of imagination, he is nevertheless vengeful to the extreme - the word "forgiveness" is not in his vocabulary.
Capricorns posess the rare combination of delusions of greatness and low self esteem - all with minimal mental capacity. This is why so many are found among upper and middle management. "
ah ha.. i find it very true!! =P

To you?Ode to the Nice Guys
This rant was written for the
Wharton
Undergraduate JournalThis is a tribute to the nice guys. The nice guys that finish last, that never become more than friends, that endure hours of whining and bitching about what assholes guys are, while disproving the very point. This is dedicated to those guys who always provide a shoulder to lean on but restrain themselves to tentative hugs, those guys who hold open doors and give reassuring pats on the back and sit patiently outside the changing room at department stores. This is in honor of the guys that obligingly reiterate how cute/beautiful/smart/funny/sexy their female friends are at the appropriate moment, because they know most girls need that litany of support. This is in honor of the guys with open minds, with laid-back attitudes, with honest concern. This is in honor of the guys who respect a girl's every facet, from her privacy to her theology to her clothing style. This is for the guys who escort their drunk, bewildered female friends back from parties and never take advantage once they're at her door, for the guys who accompany girls to bars as buffers against the rest of the creepy male population, for the guys who know a girl is fishing for compliments but give them out anyway, for the guys who always play by the rules in a game where the rules favor cheaters, for the guys who are accredited as boyfriend material but somehow don't end up being boyfriends, for all the nice guys who are overlooked, underestimated, and unappreciated, for all the nice guys who are manipulated, misled, and unjustly abandoned, this is for you. This is for that time she left 40 urgent messages on your cell phone, and when you called her back, she spent three hours painstakingly dissecting two sentences her boyfriend said to her over dinner. And even though you thought her boyfriend was a chump and a jerk, you assured her that it was all ok and she shouldn't worry about it. This is for that time she interrupted the best killing spree you'd ever orchestrated in GTA3 to rant about a rumor that romantically linked her and the guy she thinks is the most repulsive person in the world. And even though you thought it was immature and you had nothing against the guy, you paused the game for two hours and helped her concoct a counter-rumor to spread around the floor. This is also for that time she didn't have a date, so after numerous vows that there was nothing "serious" between the two of you, she dragged you to a party where you knew nobody, the beer was awful, and she flirted shamelessly with you, justifying each fit of reckless teasing by announcing to everyone: "oh, but we're just friends!" And even though you were invited purely as a symbolic warm body for her ego, you went anyways. Because you're nice like that. The nice guys don't often get credit where credit is due. And perhaps more disturbing, the nice guys don't seem to get laid as often as they should. And I wish I could logically explain this trend, but I can't. From what I have observed on campus and what I have learned from talking to friends at other schools and in the workplace, the only conclusion I can form is that many girls are just illogical, manipulative bitches. Many of them claim they just want to date a nice guy, but when presented with such a specimen, they say irrational, confusing things such as "oh, he's too nice to date" or "he would be a good boyfriend but he's not for me" or "he already puts up with so much from me, I couldn't possibly ask him out!" or the most frustrating of all: "no, it would ruin our friendship." Yet, they continue to lament the lack of datable men in the world, and they expect their too-nice-to-date male friends to sympathize and apologize for the men that are jerks. Sorry, guys, girls like that are beyond my ability to fathom. I can't figure out why the connection breaks down between what they say (I want a nice guy!) and what they do (I'm going to sleep with this complete ass now!). But one thing I can do, is say that the nice-guy-finishes-last phenomenon doesn't last forever. There are definitely many girls who grow out of that train of thought and realize they should be dating the nice guys, not taking them for granted. The tricky part is finding those girls, and even trickier, finding the ones that are single. So, until those girls are found, I propose a toast to all the nice guys. You know who you are, and I know you're sick of hearing yourself described as ubiquitously nice. But the truth of the matter is, the world needs your patience in the department store, your holding open of doors, your party escorting services, your propensity to be a sucker for a pretty smile. For all the crazy, inane, absurd things you tolerate, for all the situations where you are the faceless, nameless hero, my accolades, my acknowledgement, and my gratitude go out to you. You do have credibility in this society, and your well deserved vindication is coming.Fu-zu Jen, SEAS/WH, 2003
